The short version
- The standard car test contains 40 multiple-choice questions.
- You need at least 35 correct answers to pass.
- The result appears on screen after the exam.
- Use the latest RSA revision material because the test was revised in July 2024.
The format in numbers
For the standard car and work-vehicle theory test, you answer 40 multiple-choice questions and need 35 correct answers to pass. That means five mistakes are the maximum; a sixth takes the score below the pass mark.
The questions test understanding across road rules, safe behaviour, hazards, signs and responsible driving. A high score in one narrow area cannot compensate for never learning the rest of the syllabus, so preparation should cover the whole course.
- 40 questions in the standard BW test
- 35 correct answers required
- Computer-based multiple-choice format
- Pass or fail shown at the end
Before you book
Use the official theorytest.ie booking route linked by the RSA. The RSA warns learners about unofficial websites that imitate the booking service, so check the domain before entering personal or payment details.
Choose the correct test category and check the current identification requirements. Theory Academy helps you learn; it does not book, operate or administer the official exam.
Book only through the official Driver Theory Test service. A preparation platform and the official booking service are different things.
Your result and score report
Your result is displayed at the end of the test. The official service also sends a link to a score report using the email supplied during booking. That report identifies the category areas in which answers were correct or incorrect.
If you do not pass, the RSA says you may apply for another test after three days. A new fee applies each time, which is one reason to use mock exams only after you have built broad topic coverage.
What happens after a pass
Passing the theory test is a prerequisite for a first learner permit. The RSA states that you must apply for the learner permit within two years of passing, otherwise the theory test must be repeated.
A theory-test pass is not permission to drive by itself. The learner permit, eyesight or medical requirements where applicable, insurance, accompaniment rules and mandatory training remain separate steps.
The most reliable way to prepare
Learn the rule first, answer questions second and use a timed mock exam last. This order prevents you from memorising isolated answer patterns without understanding the situation.
Track weak topics after every practice session. If a learner repeatedly misses right-of-way, stopping distance or sign questions, another full mock exam is less useful than a short focused review of that area.
