Vehicle categories & minimum ages
Licences, permits & the law · Lesson 1.1
A licence or learner permit is not permission to drive everything. It only covers the vehicle categories printed on it. For the test, the easy marks come from matching the vehicle, weight and age to the correct category.
You will use this when choosing a theory test, applying for a first learner permit, borrowing a van, towing a trailer or checking whether a vehicle is too heavy for Category B.
- Read the main vehicle categories without getting lost in the table
- Lock in the Category B car limits
- Know the minimum age for a first car learner permit
- Understand MAM as loaded vehicle weight
- Choose B or BE when a trailer is involved
Every vehicle you can legally drive belongs to a licence category, and your licence or learner permit only covers the categories printed on it. Before we read the table, a few ground rules apply to all of them.
You must hold the right permission before driving a motor vehicle in a public place.
The permit category decides what you may drive. A car category does not automatically cover heavier combinations.
Every category also has its own minimum age for a first learner permit.
For motorcycle categories, the IBT certificate can also matter. For this car lesson, focus on the category and weight limits.
Here are the main categories, from the smallest vehicle to the largest. Notice how the minimum age climbs with the size and power of the vehicle.
Mopeds
Motorcycle categories, from light bikes to unrestricted motorcycles
Cars and light vans up to 3,500 kg MAM
Car with a heavier trailer
Work vehicles and land tractors
Professional goods vehicles and buses
Category B is the ordinary car anchor. For the theory test, remember four numbers: 17 years, 3,500 kg MAM, 8 passengers besides the driver, and trailer limits.
For a car learner, only one line really matters — Category B. These are the four facts to lock in.
First learner permit for ordinary cars.
This is the maximum loaded design weight, not the empty vehicle.
More passenger accommodation moves you into bus categories.
B can cover light trailer setups, but not heavier combinations.
Quick check before we move on — pick the category that fits an ordinary car.
Quick check
Which licence category should you think of first for an ordinary car?
That 3,500 kg limit is the MAM — not the empty weight of the car, but the car plus everything loaded into it.
You'll see MAM described in a few different ways — on the vehicle itself and in exam questions.
Design Gross Vehicle Weight may also be called Maximum Authorised Mass.
The design weight is usually shown on a metal plate attached to the vehicle.
Think of the vehicle fully loaded, not parked empty.
Too much weight increases crash risk and can be an offence.
Towing is the one place Category B gets tricky. Everything comes down to a single check — the combined weight. Use this quick decision.
B covers a trailer up to 750 kg MAM, or a vehicle-and-trailer combination up to 3,500 kg MAM.
For a car, small van or 4x4 with a heavier trailer, BE covers combinations greater than 3,500 kg but less than 7,000 kg.
The exam may describe a vehicle that looks normal but is too heavy when loaded. Always check the MAM, not just what the vehicle looks like.
You are 17 and looking at a Category B learner permit. The car part is easy. The trailer part is where people slip. Before choosing B, ask: is the trailer light, or is the combined MAM still 3,500 kg or less?
For normal car learners, Driver CPC is a boundary marker, not the main lesson. It belongs to professional truck and bus driving categories.
Do not read the category name only. For Category B, the numbers matter: 3,500 kg MAM, 8 passengers besides the driver, and trailer limits. Driver CPC belongs to professional truck and bus driving, not an ordinary car learner.
- Category B is the ordinary car category: age 17, up to 3,500 kg MAM and max 8 passengers besides the driver.
- Minimum age for a first Category B learner permit is 17.
- MAM means the vehicle at its maximum loaded design weight.
- Category B can tow a light trailer or a combination up to 3,500 kg MAM; heavier combinations usually need Category BE.
Lesson completed
You now know:
- Category B is the ordinary car category: age 17, up to 3,500 kg MAM and max 8 passengers besides the driver
- Minimum age for a first Category B learner permit is 17
- MAM means the vehicle at its maximum loaded design weight
- Category B can tow a light trailer or a combination up to 3,500 kg MAM; heavier combinations usually need Category BE
